Making Space 2010: architecture and design for children and young people

An international award and conference promoting innovation, creativity and sustainability in design for children and young people aged 0-18.

Have you created a visionary building, place or space for young children?
Tell us what influenced you and what made the space you created a success for those using it.

Are you working with young children in an exceptionally well-designed building?
Tell us about who created it for you, and why it works for the children in your care.

Making Space 2010 international award supported by the Scottish Government invites submissions from across the world for the most successful building or space (indoor or outdoor) for children and young people aged 0-18 (inclusive), completed between January 2005 and December 2010. These could include schools, nurseries, school-age childcare services, recreational, cultural or community centres for children, families and young people, combined services for this age group or services shared with other age groups, play areas or street furnishings such as school bus shelters.

Award launch: 8 March 2010
Closing date: 8 August 2010

The international conference, on 7-8 October 2010 will include two days of presentations, and study visits to centres of excellence across the country, and will encourage debate and stimulate discussion on promoting innovative design, allowing architects, planners and those working with young people in a variety of settings to share ideas and challenge conventional architectural approaches. We will also look at the vision and delivery of Scotland's Building Better Schools document and School Estate Strategy.

The event will also:

  • showcase the winner of the 'Making Space 2010' international award for architecture and design for children and young people
  • promote the importance of good design in creating space for young children
  • share best practice with study visits in Scotland and presentations from architects, academics and practitioners from Scotland, Europe and across the world
